What kind of food is this?
Garlic chives (nira) belong to the same allium family as onion, green onion, and garlic. The organosulfur compounds in alliums can oxidatively damage a dog's red blood cells, which can lead to hemolytic anemia.
Symptoms may appear not right after eating but some time later.
They look much like a leafy green, and once finely chopped and cooked they become hard to tell apart from spinach or komatsuna.
Cooked, in broth, or powdered — all the same
Allium compounds remain even after cooking. Boiled, grilled, or stir-fried garlic chives are treated the same as raw.
The compounds also pass into cooking liquid. Even with the garlic chives themselves removed, the soup — or any food with that broth on it — is not for dogs.
Dried or powdered forms are treated the same way.
